Certainly the highlight of the month of November, from an online gaming perspective at MWEB, was the launch of the Black Ops 2 dedicated servers for South Africa
. The servers have proved to be extremely popular;
servers have hit concurrent usage of over a 1000 users (that is a 1000 users playing at once) and over 31 000 unique South African IPs connected to the servers in the last week of November alone. That’s a lot of fragging going on. One of our MWEB GameZone regular contributors, Nick Holden, has prepared a fantastic set of Tips and Tricks articles for Black Ops 2:
· Tips and Tricks: Shotguns
· Tips and Tricks: Assault Rifles
· Tips and Tricks: SMGs
We also went "Horses??"
Some lucky gamers had the opportunity to check out Black Ops 2 on launch day at the MCave. Not only did participants have the opportunity to play the game on PC and XBOX, but they had the opportunity to challenge a couple of pro players in a Golden Kill competition. If you managed to frag the pro first, you got the chance to walk away with prize ranging from headsets, copies of the game to a chance to fire real guns at the False Bay Gun Club.
And there was pizza!
Another highlight was the launch of the online training program for League of Legends, where some of SA’s top LOL players took around 30 players through the basics of the game. This is part of an initiative to help people who are interested in playing online but are intimidated by a lack of skill and understanding to take the first leap. The hope is also that many of these players join the competitive scene and grow the pool of eSports players in South Africa. After all, with eSports now included in the Asia Games, we might be seeing the sport heading to the Olympics!
Soon there will be a Gold Medal winning Zerg Rush!
The end of November also brought the release of Far Cry 3. If you haven’t played it yet, shame on you! Its brilliant...did you know there is a South African band featured in the game? Yes, it’s none other than Die Antwoord with “I Fink You Freeky”. Seriaaas.
In other good news, the Wii-U launched. I played on it (thanks Mandy) and honestly, it was fun. I am a real sceptic of the idea but when I started playing Zombie-U, I was impressed with how the console and the tablet integrated and how it could be a great game to play. Just remember, don’t disconnect from the internet when you are doing the first patch to get you online, you could “brick” your brand new console! Not surprising to see Dota 2 at the top of the ladder. Steam has been handing out Dota 2 beta keys like Smarties over the last month, so a bunch more people have got their hands on the game. I’m guessing this game is going to come out of beta real soon! Gosh, it would nice to have a local server for this, hey?
From an MWEB perspective, Black Ops 2 certainly took the cake for the most played online game in November, but play on our Team Fortress 2 and Call of Duty 4 servers saw a nice increase in players (28% and 139% respectively). Thanks to all the guys and gals for supporting those servers.
You can almost bet that our MWEB Battlefield 3 servers will be taking a pounding in December now that the Aftermath DLC has been released.
Des’s Gaming Picks:
Want to know what to lobby for to get in your Christmas stocking? Here are some of the December releases that I am really looking forward to:
1. Battlefield 3 Aftermath DLC – Adds 4 new urban maps, a new game mode and a bunch of new assignments. Out 4 December.
2. Hawken – It’s a free-to-play giant robot shooter that’s heading into open beta on 12 December. I’ve played it and its kick ass. Did I mention there are big giant robots? Flipping yes!
