God of War 4 is not God of War 4

I am now officially disappointed. The next God Of War game is not a sequel to, but an origin story. Or as the press release states, we will “Discover the origins of Kratos as he takes his first steps on a now legendary quest for freedom”. Um OK, I am pretty sure the entire numbered trilogy covered this ground pretty extensively already and the two excellent PSP spin-offs did a bang up job filling in any blanks.

I realise I am making assumptions here with very little information to go on, but this seems like a monumentally bad idea from a story perspective. If this game is going to be dealing with Kratos' life prior to his service with the Olympians, then I am guessing it will be during his time as Spartan general. Compare that with the crap he was pulling off after he got his chain blades, I'm thinking it's going to be pretty boring. Speaking of chain blades, if this is a prequel to his time as a regular human, it means he will be without his signature weapon, which could mean a fundamental change in how the combat plays out.

Anyway, Todd Pappy, the game’s director has promised to put us all out of our misery when he reveals more information on April 30th according to this blog post.
