EA Get Gay Hatemail

Bioware and EA have been at the hands of many negative Fox News reports, largely due to the fact that they unashamedly include gay and lesbian content in a few of their titles. Star Wars: The Old Republic and Mass Effect 3 are the biggest titles in this department. The past couple of weeks have been revealing. The media, it turns out, aren’t the only hurdle Bioware face. GamesIndustry International have reported that EA has received “several thousand” emails and letters from fans raising their concerns with having same-sex relationships in EA’s games.

Jeff Brown, the Vice President of corporate communications spoke out to GamesIndustry, "Every one of EA's games includes ESRB content descriptors so it's hard to believe anyone is surprised by the content. This isn't about protecting children, it's about political harassment,"

He continues, "EA has not been pressured by any groups to include LGBT characters in our games. However, we have met with LBGT groups and sponsored industry forums to discuss content and harassment of players in online forums. In short, we do put options for same-sex relationships in our games; we don't tolerate hate speech on our forums," Brown added.

An incorrect report by GamesIndustry International said that Dr James Dobson’s Focus on the Family is behind the email spam. It is in fact a Christian organization called Florida Family who are pushing their readers to email Bioware. The update on their site is here.

It’s a difficult topic, because everyone has a right to believe what they want to, even if those beliefs clash. But is it right for players to demand the exclusion of everything they disagree with morally from a game? What about the murder that’s in both the aforementioned games? It becomes a very slippery slope logically. If games are going to be a reflection of reality, like a good science fiction should, then maybe it’s best we let it reflect the world we live in, regardless if you feel it’s right or wrong.
