2011 was certainly a topflight year for games. We had a multitude of quality triple-AAA games to choose from, bolstered by an excellent selection of second tier releases as well. If you weren’t able to find at least one games last year that blew you away, then you have no business calling yourself a gamer.

But it’s a new year, with new games. And it looks like we’ll have our hands incredibly full again in 2012. To make a things a little bit easier for you, the MWEB Gamezone team has compiled a list of upcoming games to look out for - broadly divided into five arbitrary categories – that we’ll reveal over the coming week. And even though we have 25 nominees, its not lost on us that there are a bunch of games not on our list that are more than worthy of salivating over. This is just like… our opinion man. So if we didn’t include your must-buy game of 2012 on list drop it in the comments. Chances are we want to play that just as badly.

Five most anticipated shooters of 2012

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier

During the early 2000s the Ghost Recon games were considered the best squad based military shooters available. They suffered a bit as the first decade of the 21st century carried on, but it looks like Future Soldier could be a renaissance for the brand.

Still a squad based shooter, Future Soldier emphasizes planning, restraint and teamwork over aggression and firepower. As such the game has a multitude of near future gadgets to allow proper tactical planning before you or your team even fires a shot.

 Max Payne 3

Welcome back Max, you miserable bastard, we missed you. This third game in the series sees New York's most hard-boiled detective out of his comfort zone and working in the South American city of São Paulo, Brazil. But if the trailer is any indication, the change of scenery hasn't done much to dissuade Max from his favourite pastime: slow-motion shooting scumbags in the face.

XCOM

Yes, yes, we know making a new Xcom as a FPS is apparently sacrilege of the worst sort, but that doesn't mean the game itself is going to be bad. Quite the contrary, Xcom looks looks like a welcome change from the current crop of corridor crawling 'realistic' military shooter that are dominating the gaming landscape right now.
With it's unique setting and and selection of genuinely devise weapons, Xcom looks just the kind of game we need to shake the status quo a bit.

Bioshock Infinite

Bioshock. Infinite. No further explanation required.

Far Cry 3

The thing we liked most about Far Cry 2 is that it was one of the first games that aimed for a realistic slant on it's shooter game play, but actually took that idea seriously. Far Cry 3 isn't making too much of a departure from the first game, once again dumping you in a wild, lawless countryside and leaving your survival up to your skill and wits.

The signature feature - a wide open world - seems to be well intact and as before you'll need to use a little foresight and planning if you want to succeed. Running and gunning isn't going to get you anywhere..
