In 2013, Benedict Evans, a highly respected freelance analyst and consultant did a deck called, "Mobile is eating the world." Digi-Capital, an investment bank for games, apps, digital media/services and tech/telecoms in its Q3 2013 Update of its Global Games Investment Review also stated that "mobile Internet is disrupting technology markets." While the growth for mobile apps seem to be a never ending flood, breaking just about every industry record, many predicted that mobile games will reach a saturation point in 2013.
They were mistaken.
According to mobile analytics firm Flurry, "Even Gaming, which was feared to reach saturation levels in 2013, posted 66% year-over-year growth in use." The gaming growth percentage is 137% lower than the highest segment growth which went to Messaging and Social. It boasted a staggering 203% growth in 2013. Social media has evolved into a beast whose hunger will never be stilled. Messaging apps like Whatsapp, Instagram and Facebook Messenger has tripled usage year-over-year. However, Mobile Gaming is not at the bottom of sector growth, News and Magazines showed a mere 31% increase, which I find surprising.
With an overall percentage growth of 115%, mobile is indeed eating the world. On December 31st, 2013 at 11:59 pm, Flurry Analytics tracked a record 4.7 Billion app sessions in a single day, for a total of 1.126 Trillion sessions for the whole year.
